Meet the Lynn and Brian

Lynn and Brian are our delivery team! They are the face of Loewen Design Studios and make sure all our customers receive their tables.

For ease Lynn - L and Brian - B.

Can you describe what your job is at Loewen Design Studios?

B-Okay, well we started off picking up our load in the morning. And at that point we have to get across the border. Clear customs. And then we proceed to our first drop of many.

L-Yeah. And it depends on which way we're going.

B-And Lynn will be planning the route for us and starting the conversation with the customers.

L-Which includes introducing ourselves as Lynn and Brian from Loewen Design Studios, who are the drive team.

B-The delivery team

L-and the delivery team. And yeah, so it's introducing ourselves and telling them where and when we're going to be approximately and we try to keep them in contact, in some cases, I've been in contact with the customer three or four times by the time we dropped off the table, but they seem to really, really like that. You know, it gives some confidence. Also, you know, we all know what it's like sitting around waiting for a delivery. There is nothing worse than when they've given you a delivery timeline of somewhere between nine and one. So it gives them an idea.

B-Yeah, we update all the time. If there's any changes to the ETA, right? We like to have an idea of where we will be parking. Lynns good that way. She'll zoom in on Google Maps and we can get an idea of the parking and where the driveway is going to be, then she'll converse with the clients quite a bit. So we will just be prepping for arrival.

IL-t will make a big difference depending on where we deliver too. We've delivered in the country, you hardly, it's a road or we're just going to fields, right? With the cows, remember the cows and then also, also like New York City, right? It's crazy. Especially if we have the trailer. We really do need to know what we are getting ourselves into with regards to parking issues, because we still got to park and unload.

B-So yeah. So when we arrive at the client's house, then Lynn will go and meet the clients while I'm getting the load ready to offload. I locate where their product is in the van or trailer and then Lynn will set up inside the house.

L-We are down to a routine now. So I go in with the flyer to introduce ourselves, right? And I go in with the blanket as well and we go and we find where we're going to be setting up the table. The blanket goes down. I give them the information, so they know we're not strangers walking in, and then we proceed, we bring all the stuff in. The tools, the table, the legs, whatever.

B-We bring everything in and close the van up again and we start putting everything together and then we do the reveal.

L-Yeah. That is the fun part and we are calling it the great reveal. Yeah. So most of the people have seen it or not, right? Whether it be in a picture or they'll see it as we are carting it out, but it's not the same thing. So, once the legs are on and then we go almost to have a drum roll and then we flip it over. And in most cases like 99.9% of the time, people are just super super thrilled.

B-Yeah.

L-From tears in eyes to screaming. One lady squealed when it was flipped over.

B-People are very excited to see the product, right? Once we've put it together, we flip it over. And there it is.

L-It’s one of our favorite parts of the job because they're so happy. Then we'll clean up and get ourselves there. We go over the care for the product. Give them some tips on that and make sure they're happy with where the tables are located in their house. We'll get it to where they want in their homes before we leave and then we're on our way. Then we you know, proceed to our next stop and do it all over again.

So how did y'all meet Ted and Darlene?

L-So Darlene's, my girlfriend from the days that I used to train in bootcamp. So Darlene has been a girlfriend for many years, Josh and my son Nathan were in school together and grew up that way. So that was another thing that we had. As it turned out, Brian and myself retired in the spring, and we were going to move on to our boat. We are liveaboards, or would like to be liveaboards on our boat. And we are going to spend the winter in the Bahamas, on our boat and that can't happen because we couldn't cross the border. So out of the blue, my girlfriend Darlene, texted me, and Brian and said, hey, I know a way that you can go south, so you can deliver tables and we haven't look back since. And we're really, really having a good time.

B-That's basically that was the connection through your gym, right. Yeah. Darlene is one your clients and for years just, you know, maintaining friendship.

L-Yeah. I had my gym for 15 years. Covid shut me down unfortunately but Darlene was with me to the bitter end for that.

If you could switch jobs with anyone in the company who would you switch with?

L-I like what we do. My job.

B-I'll take Lynn’s probably.

L-I would take Brians. I would like to say, it would be fun to learn how to make the tables. Maybe that would be really cool, and it would be probably a benefit to Brian and myself because we do have a lot of questions on how they're built etc, etc. So the knowledge of that would be really beneficial to Brian and myself. Brian's more handy at that stuff then I am, but we kind of got the hang of it but it would be cool. I think it'd be neat to make a table. Yeah, that's where I'd want to go.

B-Yeah. Making the table. Would you say the same thing?

L-Oh yeah.

Where is your favorite place that you guys have travelled to? Not just with Loewen Designs, but just ever?

L-Georgian Bay, we're in a boat in the islands up there, anchored by a waterfall. Yeah. But one thing that we have to say is we have seen some beautiful countryside. Brian and myself have been to 38, different states. I'm recording everything. So, we've been to 38 different days so far delivering tables. So we're super, super excited about that. And when we tell our customers we've been we've seen more of the states than they have.

Do you have a favorite state that you've been to?

B-I'd have to say maybe Washington.

L-Oh, you like Washington to you, like Seattle, don't you? I have to say, we went to a place called Marco Island. So Marco Island is by Fort Myers.

B-Ya its at the bottom of Florida.

L-and is an island. We had to go across the bridge to get to it and it's like a whole different world. It's, you know, the resort, you know, on steroids, it was absolutely stunning. The weather was amazing, the water was blue so it was nice but we've seen a lot of beautiful places.

B-Oh yeah. The mountains, the rolling mountains, in Vermont, the tunnels driving through. Colorado, so it's hard to pick. Yeah. It's a beautiful country that we're driving through.

Washington in the fall

So tell us about Nautical Escapes.

L-So we started Nautical Escapes when we started traveling as much as we have on our boat, We wanted individuals to experience what it was like to be on a boat to be a liveaboard and connect with that piece. It became incredibly successful, we were only really since the summer and we have a number of followers but it's pretty much what it's like to liveaboard and any helpful hints and to see some of the beautiful countryside that Canada has to offer, right?

B-Yep.

L-Our different anchorages, some helpful hints on anchoring on different walks of life of all of the building, right?

B-Yeah. But we had been following other people that were doing that, we wanted to do and now we're doing it. So we decided to go to the social media, to share that with a family, is our main goal. And then from there, it's taken off.

L-Yeah, yeah. We wanted our kids to be able to know because when we were gone, we were gone, like in some places where you don't have service, some of the areas that we are. We're up north in Georgian Bay, you know, you tucked in anchored into small little islands. So, we wanted to the social media for the kids to be able to follow us and make sure that, you know, we were good. But we've learned a lot along the way right and it's been fun. It's been super fun. We're on YouTube too. So we have Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Instagram seems to be at this point, our most successful. The kids are trying to talk us into doing Tik Tok or other things. We were worried because our numbers kept going up, going up, going up. And then we're doing what we're doing now and they're still going up, They slow down a little bit and we were worried when we got off the boat, if people would still want the follow us and the numbers would slow down a little bit, but now they're picking back up again. The colors right now are stunning and the pictures are okay but we arn't doing it justice.

B-Mm-hmm! It's hard to capture

L-Yeah, I mean the full color is like you can't beat it.

So whats something about yourself that would surprise people to know

L-Five kids and when we even tell our customers that we're married because they can't believe that we're working together, and we're married and we're still married. So we love spending time together so it's not an issue. Maybe some marriages wouldn't be able to handle it but ours can and its fun. Another thing is Brian's working on a thousand piece puzzle. Right now. I'm surprised at that and he's doing really well. We never have the patience for that.

So what did you want to be when you were growing up?

B-It's funny you asked that because I often dreamt of driving trucks. I thought well, even a lot of that would have been when I retired, perhaps do something like this, and it worked out, It's just fun, right? I always pictured like a bus driver or something. You could, you know, take a load down to Florida, but people on a bus from here to Florida or California. You know. And then be the tour guide and we would go. So it's yeah, this fell into place.

L-Yeah, it's funny. Because you often said that yeah when we retire i'm going to drive the bus and you're going to entertain the old people.

So what was your job before you retired?

B-I was a supervisor in a refinery. I've worked there at that company for 31 years in total. So yeah, it worked up towards the supervisor position. Nice. Yeah. Enjoyed that thoroughly.  The plant that I worked at has been there for over a hundred years.

So what do you like most about your job at Loewen Designs?

B-Make people happy forsure.

L-They are so beautiful and everyone is so happy all the time with them. We've delivered over 100 tables so far and set them all up. We would do it everyday if we could. We are so happy that it's almost 100 percent customer satisfaction and that we are able to work with a team that can do that.

B-Another passion i've had is woodworking so its really nice to work with this fine product.

Do you have a favorite table of ours?

L-I like the live edge and I like the bookmatch that is super, super cool. We have a beautiful table in our salon in our boat and I'm gonna talk Brian into maybe replacing it, but what about you?

B-Yeah. I’d say the bookmatch. They're all beautiful, they are really art.

L-We keep saying. Oh, this is my favorite. Oh this is my favorite. We've changed our minds so many times when we see a new table..

This is your heading text.

So what do you like to do in your spare time when you're not driving?

L-This is the longest we've had off this week because usually we do turn around after a couple days, which we don't mind. We like to walk. We're big huge enthusiasts for fitness, staying somewhat in shape.

B-So I'd say walking, resting, and cooking, we get in more cooking than you can on the road. Hooking up with the family. Seeing the kids that's probably the priority.

L-Yeah just hang out with the kids catching up with them because we have been gone a lot since September.

B-Well then all summer we were gone also. Yeah, we don't see the kids much.

L-But they are at the age where they don’t care. Yeah, they have their own lives now.

So what is your favorite dog that you've met on your trip so far? Do you have a favorite? It's hard to pick. I know too.

L-There were two chocolate labs and they were so excited. They wouldn't stop jumping and he was like I’m so sorry. And I'm like we're dog people, it's okay. But a lot of people when we show up, they'll have their dogs in the backroom or outside or whatever. We will tell them that we are dog people. So they'll let them out, so cute. Yeah. The two chocolate labs. Yeah.Does your family have any dogs?Yeah we have a dog. So Cali is her name. She's the border collie mixed with the blue heeler. Well she said she's like 12. So, she's an old lady. Yes, she used to come on our walks with the boot camp.

The chocolate labs

Is there anything else you'd like to add about Loewen Designs?

B-It's been a great opportunity for us. Yeah, just fell on our lap and we're thrilled for the opportunity and yeah we're enjoying it very much and delivering great product.

L-And yeah, it makes it easy.

B-Wonderful people. The clients are so nice right when we show up

L-and it's always an adventure. You have no idea what you're getting into when you turn that corner. All the different houses we've been into.

B-Yeah. Right and families. Yeah, big kids little kids.

L-You know, that Halloween story was so sweet? Yeah, yeah, unreal. Okay, can you? I can't imagine, I can't imagine them having that many people gone. I know to wait, they're gonna have a thousand, that's what they said, a thousand kids for their Halloween. So we had to get in and out. We got there at 2:30ish. And there we saw kids across the street, going from house to house already so that's why he said he had said to us. Can, you know, please, you know, come as soon as you can.
