Pedestals are excellent supports for tables. Especially the ones with smaller posts in the middle, they stay totally out of the way of legs and chairs - our version of this is the Jennings base. These bases work especially well with small tables. Small tables really need as much free space under the table as possible, and because small tables are small, there’s not a lot of weight on that post.

Added Stability
Larger tables sometimes want a center pedestal too. This style of base still does a great job of staying out of the way under the table. It can also do a great job of supporting the table top, but sometimes we need a little extra help for this. A second post is a way to do this. This can help in a number of different ways. One of the biggest benefits is preventing the table from twisting. With a single connection point, especially when the edge is far away, it’s easy to get the top to spin a little. When that happens the base tries to spin it back, and then it can bounce back and forth. This is a lot less fun in practice than it is to write. A second post makes this almost impossible. By having 2 connection points further apart from each other, the table just won’t twist like this. With two posts, the support is also much closer to the end of the table which is really useful for a longer table. This makes the table more stable.

Extension Tables
Extension tables don’t always need to start large, but they do usually get large. And even if they don’t, they have the capability to be very long while extending them. For these reasons we always make sure to do center extensions with a double pedestal, if we’re going with a pedestal at all.

Double Pedestal Options
We can do these double posts in a few different ways. We can do one larger floor plate, or two separate ones. Both of these can be very stable in many settings, and it’s mostly up to your taste.
Basically a double post is there to support larger tables. Reduce the twist, have supports closer to the edge, and add stability to account for the extra weight. If you’re looking for a longer pedestal table, or I guess any kind of table, don’t hesitate to reach out.
