Our design team often hears: “how do I pair new hardwood furniture with my existing hardwood flooring? Won’t it clash?” There are a few different ways to go about designing with multiple colors. Here are some tips.
Cool Tones vs Warm Tones
The first thing to consider is how you can use warm vs. cool colors and tones in your space. This is super important as it can shift how colors look and change the “vibe” of a space. Warm tones can bring a cozy vibe to the space but can make the space look a little bit yellow or red. This can also be an issue if the warm tones are a bit too matchy-matchy, dating the look of your space. Cool tones can make a space feel bright and clean, but too much of the same could get a little industrial or corporate. Find a good balance by pairing warm and cool tones to give a bit more variety in the space.

Mix and Match
The second is to not be afraid of mixing colors and textures. They do not all have to be in the same color family to go well together, nor do they have to have the same textures. For example, in my space I am getting a new pair of nightstands and taking into account the other furniture and decorations already in the space. I have an oak bedframe finished in a medium cool toned grey (similar to our Steel finish) and a similar toned grey fabric chair. This space also has warm toned green and cream walls with a cream floral rug and warm mid-toned brown oak frames on the wall. The mix of tones and textures creates some nice variety that I can work with. For my nightstands, I am choosing to go with a mid-tone brown on oak similar to the frames on my wall to break up the cool tones of the bedframe and chair. For this I would choose our Oak in Coconut as it has a rich blend of red and yellow undertones in it which will balance out the blue undertones in the bedframe.

Make It Yours
The third is to not get hung up on perfection. Add things to your space you like just because you like them, not necessarily that it “fits” best in your space. Mixing woods, finishes, paint colors, fabrics and patterns can give your space character and let your style shine. Using just one color or tone in a space can seem like the easiest option so you don’t have to worry about what matches. But this can create a flat and boring space. The goal here is not perfection but instead just putting together colors you love to create a space that is the most like you.
