At Loewen Design Studios we love walnut. We build a lot with walnut, as it's a beautiful wood. We use Black Walnut, which comes from the North East. Black Walnut has a lot of character, and a lot of different colors. Typically our walnut has blondes and dark browns, with reds and lighter browns mixed in. It has some knots, and a lot of varied grain.
So what is Select Walnut?
It's kind of exactly what it says, it's walnut that gets selected. Select Walnut doesn't have blonde tones and doesn't have knots. The process for doing this is fairly straightforward: be choosy. Select only the parts of the wood that adhere to these standards. What this does mean is cutting off and throwing away a lot more wood. This is why Select is more expensive, it takes time to choose, and it means less of the tree gets used.
That said, Select Walnut is very pretty, if that's the look you're after! It has consistent dark coloring, and the grain is consistent without knots. It's a classic Mid Century Modern look.
