Parents aren’t supposed to have a favorite child, but they all do. At Loewen Design Studios we work with 4 kinds of woods, and we all have favorites. My dad’s favorite is Walnut, my mom’s is Rock Maple, and I’m torn between Ash and Oak. I just love the way the grain in the wood comes alive when it’s finished and the two tone look that the wood table ends up having.

A Parsons Style table base is a classic base, we have 4 different types of parsons that we offer. 

Extension tables are a wonderful thing. They add a lot more space to a table when you need but the table is still a smaller size for smaller gatherings. The flexibility of it cannot be matched and a center extension is a great choice.

The first thing to note is that a parsons style base has a leg in each corner. This allows it to be one of the most functional table designs. Wherever the legs are on a table, it’s difficult to sit at. A chair can’t be pushed in if there’s a leg sitting right there, and feet can bang into it. .

At Loewen Design Studios we work with Rubio Monocoat to finish our tables. With Rubio we’re able to create a variety of finish looks, but the most dramatic look must be the black finish, especially on Ash or Oak. So how is it that this finish gets so very black? And how black is it really?

Oak is one of the best hardwoods available. This is for a number of reasons. First, it's very hard. It’s a very solid hardwood that will hold up very well to everyday use for many many years. It will hold up to most everything you have to throw at it. This is why it’s been used for so long in dining tables.
